M.A.D. Northwest’s “The Otherside”

About this project

First and foremost, we are passionate fans of hip hop and proud citizens of the northwest. Hip hop has become the dominant genre in Seattle and the amount of talent that is present in the area right now is absolutely mind blowing. The problem is that for the most part, hip hop artists from Seattle have historically struggled to gain mass appeal. We’ve heard from locals that the excitement and overall vibe of the current music scene is reminiscent of the grunge movement in the 1990′s. This could be the start of something big.

Background

“The Otherside” project is the vision of local Olympian JR Celski, Vinny Dom, and filmmakers Dan Torok and Jeff Santos. Over the course of a year, we’ve compiled hours of interview and concert footage taken in various locations around the country including New York, Massachusetts, Nebraska and Colorado. These interviews will give an in depth look at a burgeoning hip hop scene in Seattle that has yet to break into the national mainstream. See the other “not so glamorous” side of artists lives as we follow them into their homes, studios, backstage, and on national tours. Experience everything from the daily struggles and obstacles, to the triumphs and successes these artists face as they reach for stardom. The film touches on various hip hop stereotypes including race, community, drug addiction, and sexism. The diverse list of talent in Seattle will allow you to feel connected to hip hop in a way you’ve never felt before.

Featured artists in the film:

Macklemore, Massive Monkees, Jake One, Shabazz Palaces, Blue Scholars, Vitamin D, DJ B-Mello, The Physics, Common Market, J. Pinder, Grynch, Sol, Fresh Espresso, Mad Rad, Eighty4 Fly, Spaceman, Khingz, Wizdom, and many more.

We need your help!

Thus far, all of the costs of the film have come from our own pockets. The funding from KickStarter will be used solely for post-production costs – editing, color correction, audio engineering, DVD printing, and film festival submissions.

Can we raise more than our goal?

YES! And YES! $15,000 is just A PART of our budget and Kickstarter allows you to raise as much money as is given before the deadline. This means more ability for us, the filmmakers, to travel, collect more interviews, and allows us more assistance in getting the equipment needed to film a feature length documentary.
